When I got to my office, I did a quick check of my email—there was no information from Nina on Tricia Burrows yet—and then I listened to a call Kendall put in my voicemail.

That done, I buzzed Leslie, told her I was in my office, and asked her to come and see me as soon as she was available.

She said she’d be down in ten minutes, and while I waited, I used that time to return the call I found in my voicemail.

It was a call from Congresswoman Renee Higgins, the longtime member of the House of Representatives from Arizona. I met her several years ago when I was investigating a judge from her district.

Once I got her on the line, we chatted about my new agency for a few minutes before the congresswoman said she’d like to make an appointment to discuss a personal matter with me regarding her husband. “Yes, absolutely. I imagine you’ll still be tied up with the Daley case anyway. Have you given any more thought to hiring another investigator?”

I motioned over toward the sofa. “Have a seat, and I’ll bring you up to speed on that. You might be surprised when you hear who may be interested in coming to work here.”

I spent a few minutes telling Leslie about the conversation I’d had with Detective Ford, and when I asked her how she felt about having an ex-cop working at MGI, she was totally for it.

“We had a retired police detective at Bowman,” she said, “and his relationship with the D.C. Police helped us with several of our cases, so I’m all for hiring Kyle, as long as you’re good with it.”

“He told me he wants to wait until we close the Daley case before we talk about his employment here, but I’m inclined to encourage him to join us as soon as possible. How did things go when you talked with him yesterday?”

Leslie pulled her laptop out of her handbag, and as she was opening it, she said, “He was very cordial. He even allowed me to see the
