When I got to my office, I did a quick check of my emailâthere was no information from Nina on Tricia Burrows yetâand then I listened to a call Kendall put in my voicemail.
That done, I buzzed Leslie, told her I was in my office, and asked her to come and see me as soon as she was available.
She said sheâd be down in ten minutes, and while I waited, I used that time to return the call I found in my voicemail.
It was a call from Congresswoman Renee Higgins, the longtime member of the House of Representatives from Arizona. I met her several years ago when I was investigating a judge from her district.
Once I got her on the line, we chatted about my new agency for a few minutes before the congresswoman said sheâd like to make an appointment to discuss a personal matter with me regarding her husband. When I asked her if it was marital infidelity or child support, she indicated it was the former, and I made an appointment for her to come in and see me next week.
Leslie knocked on my door at the moment I was telling Representative Higgins goodbye.
As I opened the door to let her in, I said, âIâm sorry to keep you waiting. I was on the phone with Renee Higgins, the congresswoman from Arizona. Sheâll be coming in next week to discuss her husbandâs infidelity problems with us.â
âThe last time I checked our schedule, it looked like Kendall had filled up almost all our appointment slots for next week. Did you find an opening for Representative Higgins?â
âSheâs coming in next Friday afternoon. I know Renee pretty well, and if she decides to hire us, I think sheâd be more comfortable if you handled her case. Are you okay with that?â
âYes, absolutely. I imagine youâll still be tied up with the Daley case anyway. Have you given any more thought to hiring another investigator?â
I motioned over toward the sofa. âHave a seat, and Iâll bring you up to speed on that. You might be surprised when you hear who may be interested in coming to work here.â
I spent a few minutes telling Leslie about the conversation Iâd had with Detective Ford, and when I asked her how she felt about having an ex-cop working at MGI, she was totally for it.
âWe had a retired police detective at Bowman,â she said, âand his relationship with the D.C. Police helped us with several of our cases, so Iâm all for hiring Kyle, as long as youâre good with it.â
âHe told me he wants to wait until we close the Daley case before we talk about his employment here, but Iâm inclined to encourage him to join us as soon as possible. How did things go when you talked with him yesterday?â
Leslie pulled her laptop out of her handbag, and as she was opening it, she said, âHe was very cordial. He even allowed me to see the
